Honorable Mention Poem for Midnight: Another Love Maryann Hazen Stearns - ---10:17 PM - Do not make the mistake of thinking this is a love poem to stars of frost that shoot slowly along my window pane overnight or to the gem of light poised upon the tip of a melting wax stick or amber sea caught up in a carafe on the hardwood floor next to my ivory lace brassiere. - ---10:46 PM - Nor is this a love poem to the scent of my husbands' neck as it presses firmly against my cheek while his back arches toward the ceiling again and again as my thunderstruck thighs speckle in nearly-fatigued perspiration and my throat whispers those words he loves to hear and his throat whispers them back into my wild hair pouring over and over the crushed pillows beneath the attic where a mouse scuttles completely undisturbed by our celebration and rolls a bit of dog kibble down the inside of the wall then scrapples after it directly behind the headboard of our bed where we now lie sleeping tangled in flannel sheets. - ---11:33 PM - And, this is certainly not a love poem to the silent chimes outside the window or the popping-tree moon forever struck upon the midnight sky shimmering on the shingles of our roof nor through our sequined window stars nor to the tiny ice stalagmites left on the sill come lazy daybreak. - ---12:00 AM - I've been known to fall in love quick as a heartbeat but this is not a love poem to things I have fallen in love with; it is a poem to a few of the things I will fall in love with again tonight. ~*~
